VMC solutions for the American rail freight network – a success story:

The logistics industry is currently in the midst of a massive migration from outdated mobile transportation and logistics solutions to run on new, modern platforms such as Android, iOS and Windows 10. With U.S. wireless carriers upgrading their networks from 3G to 4G and many carriers abandoning 3G altogether, a U.S. railroad company needed a robust mobile network solution with the latest wireless technology that would work around the clock.

Working with experts in IT and software solutions for supply chain logistics, Winmate provided a bespoke FM10 Vehicle Mounted Computer with the latest mobile technology. It was built to withstand the vibrations of extreme heat and ice, the hustle and bustle of 24-hour operations and non-stop 4G/LTE connectivity.

More than 3000 Winmate FM10 VMCs have been deployed and are running smoothly. They ensure higher employee productivity, lower operating costs and improved customer service, thereby increasing overall efficiency for the rail company's end customer.

A VMC that can be used around the clock in a variety of rough terrain

After trains have transported freight across the states to local ports, trucks are used for the final leg of the journey. With the help of on-board computers, truck drivers can use real-time GPS navigation, shipment management and planning, parcel delivery and tracking, proof of delivery and other services. This contributes significantly to the efficiency and smooth operation of the entire network. The VMC must be able to withstand the constant shocks of 24/7 transportation in varying terrain with large temperature fluctuations while providing continuous 4G/LTE connectivity without interruption.

After understanding the customer's specific needs and requirements, the Winmate team put together a demo unit that was first extensively tested in the lab to ensure it met the rail end customer's stringent specifications. A pilot test was then conducted with 50 units tested over several months to ensure real-world operation and to fine-tune and troubleshoot. As the railroad company covers a large geographical area with varying terrain and weather, the units had to be able to operate in different temperatures and by different personnel.

One of the biggest challenges that had to be overcome during the pilot phase was the power source for the device. Since the power source is fed by gasoline-powered vehicles, the voltage is neither steady nor constant, so a good drive system was needed to ensure that the VMCs were not subjected to power surges. Finally, a variable DC power supply with an input of 10-60 V was used to allow for different truck configurations.

After the pilot test phase, the end customer has officially deployed the customized Winmate FM10 vehicle computers in its freight vehicles. More than 3000 trucks have been equipped with the FM10 and are operating smoothly around the clock across the country.
